Venture Capital News: Sun Basket Announces $4.5M in Funding

2015-09-18
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, New healthy cooking service announced $4.5 million in venture funding.
Sun Basket (sunbasket.com), the new healthy cooking service that delivers the best organic, non-GMO ingredients and delicious, easy-to-make recipes weekly to your door, today announced $4.5 million in venture funding. Led by top-tier early-stage investors PivotNorth Capital and Baseline Ventures, the round also includes investment from Paul Allen's Vulcan Capital, Roth Capital, The Florence Group, Rembrandt Ventures, Correlation Ventures, Relevance Capital, Lucas Venture Group, and other high profile venture capital firms and angel investors. Coinciding with the funding raised, Sun Basket welcomes Don Barnett, co-founder/CFO of organicgirl produce and early Sun Basket investor and board member, as chief operating officer and chief financial officer.

'At Sun Basket, our mission is to make healthy cooking easy and delicious by delivering Northern California's healthy food culture to the rest of America,' says Sun Basket CEO and founder, Adam Zbar. 'We're re-imagining the food supply chain with state-of-the-art technology that allows amazing food from the best organic farms to reach a wider American audience,' adds Sun Basket COO, Don Barnett.

Growing over 20% per week since its Beta launch in March, Sun Basket embraces the Northern California value system by delivering sustainably-sourced, organic ingredients from the West Coast's best farms, plus recipes developed by Chef Justine Kelly, former head chef of the James Beard Award-winning The Slanted Door restaurant. Rapid growth has also stemmed from their Paleo and Gluten-free meal plan options, appealing to the increasing demand of consumers looking for convenient meal solutions that fit a clean-eating lifestyle and unique dietary restrictions.

'Sun Basket is one of the fastest growing startups in the valley right now,' said Tim Connors, founder of PivotNorth Capital and former Sequoia partner. 'With over 80% of Americans cooking at home 3-5 times per week, and the fastest growing segment of the grocery industry being organic, non-GMO food, we saw the chance to invest into a market with huge potential,' added Steve Anderson, top 5 Midas investor and founder of Baseline Ventures.

Currently available in California, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Arizona and Nevada, Sun Basket plans to expand to additional markets in 2016. The service aspires to disrupt the $600 million grocery store business while building a more just, sustainable food system through:

Sourcing the highest quality organic, non-GMO ingredients from Northern California's best farms, ranchers, and fishermen;
Providing balanced, diet-specific recipes, including Paleo, Gluten-free, and Vegetarian options;
Allowing users to customize their meal selections based on personal choice;
Delivering easy, delicious farm-to-table recipes that take less than 30 minutes to cook;
Making sustainability easy: Users ship back their boxes and packaging for recycling and re-use, while pre-measured ingredients drastically reduce food waste compared to traditional grocery shopping.
Sun Basket is led by Webby Award-winning founder and CEO, Adam Zbar. With Executive Chef Justine Kelly, he found a kindred spirit who helped him realize his vision of creating an easy way for busy people to make cooking at home easy, delicious, and nutritious.
