Doctor on Demand Launches App, Raises $3M

2013-12-10
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, Doctor on Demand has launched its service and raised a $3 million seed round.
Doctor On Demand, a new technology company that is modernizing health care, launched a service today that connects consumers to a licensed U.S. physician via iPhone, Android or tablet from anywhere. The company has also raised $3 million in seed funding from financial institutions including Venrock, Andreessen Horowitz, Google Ventures, Lerer Ventures, Shasta Ventures and Athena Health CEO Jonathan Bush.

The service is available across fifteen U.S. states*, covering two-thirds of the nation, and each video call costs just $40, which is on par with most insurance co-pays and significantly cheaper than urgent care or emergency room visits. Patients have the option of paying with their Health Care Spending Account, Flexible Spending Account or major credit card.

'We created Doctor On Demand to help modernize and transform the health care system,' said Adam Jackson, co-founder and CEO, Doctor On Demand. 'Our main goal is to ease the stress patients encounter while navigating the U.S. health care system and bring the focus back to quality and convenience for both patients and doctors. We're helping patients receive high-quality medical care without having to leave their homes or offices, therefore cutting down time, cost and worry.'

By using the secure, HIPAA-compliant technology, patients receive convenient, high-quality health care for non-emergent clinical issues that do not immediately require a direct presence, lab work or imaging.

The service can help patients with ailments including: Common colds, fevers, coughs, sinus infections and allergies; pre/post travel issues, including upset stomach, urinary tract infections, muscle and sports injuries; pediatric colds, fever and vomiting or general questions for parents with a sick child; rashes or eye problems, with patients uploading high-resolution photos during the call; ailments suffered while busy, offering an after-hours option other than the ER or urgent care; or patients needing common prescriptions or an existing prescription refilled.

Through partnerships with some of the nation's top health systems, the Doctor On Demand physician network has grown to 1,000 physicians nationally. The physicians are overseen by co-founder and chief medical officer, Dr. Pat Basu, M.D., a former Stanford physician and White House Fellow. The company has assembled a multidisciplinary team of qualified doctors, engineers and experts in health care policy including former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, who serves on Doctor On Demand's board of directors, to increase access to health care.

'Doctor On Demand seamlessly integrates modern technology with high quality, patient-centric and cost-effective care,' said Dr. Basu. 'Not only does this improve the lives of patients and doctors, but it can be one of the solutions for the cost, access and capacity issues that currently plague our health care system.'

Dr. Basu, a health care leader and practicing physician; Jackson, a seasoned entrepreneur and engineer; and Jay McGraw, the Emmy Award-winning executive producer of The Doctors, created Doctor On Demand with the goal of improving patient access to high quality, service-oriented and cost-effective medical care.

*Doctor On Demand is available in the following states: California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Washington.
