Venture Capital News: GameOn Grabs $2M

2016-07-14
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, GameOn, a mobile engagement platform for sports fans, today announced the release of their updated app and an additional $2 million raised in its latest funding round.
GameOn creates a single-screen mobile sports experience for fans, combining chat with live updates and video highlights. GameOn delivers a direct channel for content providers, entertainers, and current and former professional athletes to share the game with their audience. The Series Seed round includes investment from Quest Venture Partners, XG Ventures, Next News Ventures, and the DeBartolo family, all of whom join other notable sports business investors like Joe Montana and Snoop Dogg in backing GameOn. Nine-time NBA All-Star and renowned trash talk artist Gary Payton is getting into the mix by leading an AngelList syndicate.

GameOn's founders first developed the platform to meet the need for a single media destination for fans to connect with what's happening in sports, with news, scores, highlights, chat, and athlete interaction. In this version, new users can instantly choose from a variety of 'huddles,' internal groups where friends can get together to follow sporting events in real time while the app bubbles up fresh content like video highlights. The landing experience has been redesigned to surround returning users' favorite huddles with categorized recommendations based on real-time events, trends, and app activity. Other new features include a straightforward search-and-create system and more user-friendly interface. GameOn will soon introduce featured huddles that can be run by sponsors, creating even more opportunities for advertisers.

GameOn has expanded the range of followable topics to be inclusive of publishers and other content partners which brings an even broader scope of content, like lifestyle and offseason commentary, all discoverable in the context of the messaging platform. The developers will look to expand on this feature set and make the platform a primary tool for publishing groups, blogs, podcasts, and other content creators to build their brand.

'We have always been focused on mobile fan engagement,' said Kalin Stanojev, Founder and Chief Product Officer of GameOn. 'But as fans are evolving, we're evolving as a company and as a product. Being a fan is more than an in-game activity, it's the stories and community that surround it and we've worked closely with users to retool the experience to reflect that. The new app gives communities a place to celebrate their passion, even on the off-days.'

'When we started GameOn, we shared a vision of a company that would hold sports content in as high regard as the supporting technology,' said Alex Beckman, Founder and CEO of GameOn. 'We've been working closely with athletes, users, and content providers to innovate in the content-based messenger space. We can't wait to roll out the exciting features and ideas this new capital has fueled.'

GameOn is available now for free as an Android and iOS application. Learn more at www.getgameonapp.com.
