Venture Capital News: Shippable Secures $8M Series A Funding

2014-11-06
SEATTLE, WA, Containerized continuous integration and delivery platform, today announced that it has raised $8 million in Series A funding.
Shippable, Inc., a containerized continuous integration and delivery platform, today announced that it has raised $8 million in Series A funding. Coming on the heels of a successful $2 million seed round in December, the new funding will be used to further accelerate growth of the company and to drive adoption of its innovative platform into the enterprise.

Continuous integration and delivery (CI and CD) is the holy grail for companies looking to innovate faster. It helps teams identify bugs instantly, improve quality and reduce risk in their release cycles. Shippable has reimagined this concept by leveraging containers and created a platform that delivers speed, performance, ease-of-use and cost-effectiveness for customers, both in hosted public environments and private data centers.

Madrona Venture Group led the round, with participation from existing investors including Paul Allen's Vulcan Capital, Divergent Ventures and Founders Co-Op. As part of the financing, Tim Porter, managing director at Madrona Venture Group, will join the board.

'The phrase 'continuous integration' is a misnomer. Traditional CI tools like Jenkins only help automate unit tests, and functional testing on staging environments is still predominantly manual and not really 'continuous.' We have created a modern CI platform that automates the entire delivery pipeline and makes fast and agile releases possible for all enterprises,' said Avi Cavale, founder and CEO of Shippable. 'We're really thrilled to work with Madrona. They have supported us and watched us grow since our seed round and will be great partners as we expand our business to the enterprise and beyond.'

Shippable helps software teams accelerate their software development lifecycle by bringing together the power of containerization with an easy to use, automated continuous delivery platform. Shippable's platform achieves this by giving customers:

Automated Functional Testing with instant, on demand dev/test environments that are containerized replicas of production
Hybrid labs that can seamlessly grow or shrink across on-premise and cloud machines with changes in workloads
Continuous integration and delivery with an automated pipeline from 'code to production'
Together, these produce a modern 'ideal lab' that is cost-effective and simple to maintain compared to traditional approaches that require a significant upfront and ongoing investment. Shippable's novel approach reduces a typical enterprise's dev/test lab footprint by up to 70 percent, while also improving application quality and accelerating time to market.

Shippable runs on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and is natively built on Docker, an open source project that is rapidly driving adoption of 'containerization.' However, customers using VMs can still get the same benefits since the Shippable platform can abstract containerization, thus not requiring any changes to how code is written or deployed. Shippable's value proposition is supported by the rapid growth in usage. Since v2.0 was launched in early September, Shippable has added more than 20,000 users and 2,500 organizations, and builds on the platform have more than doubled month over month for the last several months.

'Containers and container-based technologies are one of the largest trends impacting IT over the next decade. Avi and his team have leveraged this technology in an innovative way to create a much better CI/CD service; something that solves a major pain point for customers,' said Tim Porter, managing director, Madrona Venture Group. 'We believe Shippable can become an indispensable platform for developers and enterprises managing the software development lifecycle, both now and in the coming wave of container-based environments. And, most importantly, Avi and his co-founder Manisha Sahasrabudhe are incredible entrepreneurs with outstanding customer-focus and long-term vision and we feel privileged to partner with them.'
